Celebrating the 2021 Cricket season at Player Sponsor Event

As proud sponsors of Somerset County Cricket Club, we enjoyed a fantastic evening last week at the annual Player Sponsor Event.

This year’s season was packed with incredible moments to remember for all SCCC supporters. Here are some of Rotec’s favourites:

Welcome Sonny Baker

The young Somerset paceman, Sonny Baker, made his debut for the SCCC at the Royal London Cup win over Derbyshire at home in July. It was an outstanding opening spell and by the end of the summer the 18-year-old had 10 wickets in the competition, had signed his first professional contract and was joining up with the England U19s.

Incredible Derby win

Somerset’s first T20 win in Bristol since 2015 saw Lewis Gregory claim career best figures of five for 24 as the hosts were restricted to 161 for seven from their 20 overs. From that point onwards, it was the Devon Conway show. The New Zealand international opened the Somerset reply and helped himself to 81 not out from just 65 balls and in doing so passed the 50-mark for the third time in four innings.

Rew takes on India

James Rew was named in the County Select squad for the three-day match against India which took place this summer at Emirates Riverside. James made quite an impression, stumping Cheteshwar Pujara in the tourists first innings. He also removed Axar Patel.

Waller and Davey presented with County Caps

Before our home Vitality Blast clash against Gloucestershire, Max Waller and Josh Davey were presented with their County Caps by Club Captain, Tom Abell.

Glamorgan victory secures Somerset’s Quarter Final Place

Somerset sealed a place in the Vitality Blast quarter-finals as they hammered Glamorgan by 74 runs at Sophia Gardens in July.

Rotec Hydraulics Ltd has sponsored Somerset County Cricket Club for more than 5 years. Katie Trevarthen-Land: Work Experience

Katie Trevarthen-Land: Work Experience

Katie, who studies Level 3 Engineering at Bridgwater & Taunton college joined us for a week of work experience on the 28th October. We asked Katie’s a few questions…

What attracted you to Rotec for work experience? I live quite close to Rotec and I have heard that it is a really good company so I tried my best to get a place.

Do you have a specific engineering job in mind for when you finish college?  Unfortunately I don’t have a clear idea of what I would like to do specifically, all I know is that I would like to become an engineer and I don’t think I would want to go into an electrical field.

What do you like to do in you free time? In my free time I read a lot of fiction, as well as watch crime shows on tv, I also enjoy learning new things about the shows I watch, so about crime and the police and the military, these sorts of things.

How are you finding the experience so far? I am really enjoying it, I am learning an abundance of new things and it is amazing to experience the work place of the type of job I would like to do that I would like to go into. All the people I have met have been very welcoming and kind and overall my impression is that this is a lovely place to work.

Katie is going to spend a week at our Taunton Headquarters, working in a variety of different departments.

  • Monday

Introductions and H&S including YP risk assessment, then joining the warehouse team for a basic overview of stores.

  • Tuesday

With the Warehouse & Stores team, introducesinto more in depth process review. Katie will be involved in booking in/out, Packing and Picking.

  • Wednesday

Basic website design principles, structured around a subject of Katie’s choice. Introduction to Profile writing and Customer Feedback Surveys using SurveyMonkey.

  • Thursday

Shadowing electrical engineers in the electrical bay and performing a variety of tasks.

  • Friday

Overview of design to conception. Basic engineering tasks within the workshop – use of hand tools etc.

5 years of sponsoring the Somerset Cricket Club

SCCC win the RLODC 2019

In 2014, we started our Somerset County Cricket Club sponsorship journey with branded rain covers.

Little did we know, that on the day, we forged a relationship that would last half a decade (and counting) and bring us so much joy over the 5 years. We have watched the players and the club grow and transform, emerging victorious in this year’s Royal London One Day Cup.

It has been an incredible journey so far and we look forward to supporting the team for years to come.

Specialised training for our engineers

We have received the latest certification and passport cards for engineers whom have carried out training week commencing 25/03.

At Rotec, we believe the work we do is only as good as the people who do it. Maintaining high standards and safe work practices is paramount, which is why we invest into high quality training for all of our engineers. A number of them attended courses in March, designed specifically for the Fluid Power industry by The British Fluid Power Association (BFPA):

The engineers have now been supplied with the certification and updated engineer passport cards.

TRAINING PASSPORT SCHEME FROM THE BFPA

“This new initiative developed by the BFPA aims to help you keep an easily accessible record of the BFPA training you have achieved. You will be able to show these training passport cards to employers and customers to confirm qualifications and they will act as a reminder for when individual training courses need to be renewed.”

You can read more about Engineer Passports on the BFPA website.

One week of work experience at Rotec

Last month, we were pleased to team up with the Kingsmead School in Wiveliscombe, Somerset, to provide a work experience for one of their pupils: Harry Alcock. Harry joined our Taunton Depot for a week, to experience first-hand how Rotec operates. Under the direction of Matt Turnbull, Rotec’s purchasing manager, Harry spent time working in the Stores, Warehouse, Electrical Bay and the office learning about Mechanical Design and Website build.

Harry was in for a Health and Safety briefing on Monday morning, before spending the afternoon with our Stores Manager, where he learned the general operational principles such as booking in/out, packing and picking. The next day, Harry was actively involved in the Stores day to day activities discussed the previous day and assisted with assembling a crate for one of Rotec’s marine customers.

On Wednesday, Harry joined the marketing department where he was introduced to website building using the popular online platform Wix. Harry chose to create a website focused on supercars and spent the day with Rotec’s marketing executive creating a working site using best marketing practices. The website Harry created is available on: https://harrysalcock03.wixsite.com/harryssupercars

Thursday morning was spent in the warehouse hose assembly with our team of engineers, wrapping hoses for our utilities customer.

Harry then joined our electrical engineering team, in the electrical bay, learning about safe working practises and some hands on electrical work.

On Friday morning, Harry was back in the office, working under the guidance of Rotec’s engineering director (pictured), who taught Harry about CAD design, before moving onto assisting the stores and the warehouse in the afternoon, with their usual Friday housekeeping tasks.

Matt, who supervised and supported Harry through-out his working experience, was impressed at Harry’s work ethic, at his ability to follow instructions and his positive attitude. We would gladly welcome Harry back anytime and we look forward to the next time we are able to support the local schools with their work placements.

Paul Prouse foreword for BFPDA

Rotec’s own Managing Director, Paul Prouse, was selected to hold a chairman position for the BFPDA (British Fluid Power Distributors Association) throughout 2016. In his 2017 foreword for the association’s publication ‘Yearbook & Members Directory’, Paul talks about two of the topics dominating the headlines of newspapers across the world; Brexit and Women in power…

“It is hard to put pen to paper and not talk about Brexit, the topic has dominated the headlines throughout 2016 cultivated continuously by everyone from small SMEs through to large corporate businesses trying to second guess what ‘best strategy’ for their business should take whilst the politicians arguably find themselves with a task to extract the UK from Europe that in reality, the net effect is unknown along with strategy or policy that was never scripted.

I will come back to Brexit. In the meantime, what has also been interesting throughout the year and in part has caused me to reflect on the situation within the trade members of BFPDA and our industry as a whole is the renewed emphasis on women within the industry. The global stage has been dominated by Mrs Merkel, Mrs May and the near miss of Mrs Clinton joining the ranks as respective leaders of 3 of the world’s wealthiest nations providing a healthy balance in tipping the scales that in part have been dominated by men.”
